The Chemical  and Non Metallic Products Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (CANMPSSAN), an affiliate of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and international Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General’s Unions (ICEM) came into existence on 15th August,1978 after house unions ion Nigeria were restructured into industrial unions. Prior to this restructuring exercise the seven prominent registered and unregistered unions of Senior Staff within the Chemical industry were:

  1. Sterling Products and Allied Company Senior Staff Association, was registered in 1976.
  2. Nigercem Company ltd Senior Staff Association was registered in 1977.

The existing but unregistered Senior Staff Association include:

  1. Berger Paints Senior Staff Association.
  2. Management Senior Staff Association of west African Portland Cement Company
  3. Ido Plastic Senior Staff Association.
  4. Metal Products Senior Staff Association
  5. Dumex Pharmaceutical  Senior Staff Association

Early in 1976, the Federal Government dissolved the union and appointed a sole Administrator in person of Mr. M.O. Abiodun to restructure the Nigeria Trade Union movement. One of Mr. Abiodun’s terms of reference was the restructuring of the union along industrial lines. At the end of the exercise, he came up with the recommendation of 42 industrial unions of junior workers, 18 industrial unions of Senior Staff, and 18 Employer’s association.

Government acceptance of this recommendation led to the signing into law, the Trade Union amendment Decree No 22 of 1978, the 78 industrial Unions include 18 Senior Staff Association of which the Chemical and Non metallic Products Senior Staff Association of Nigeria was one.

Mr. M.O. Abiodun then calls for elections into the newly registered unions but restricted participation to only the former registered associations. Hence in the case of CANMPSSAN Delegates came from only Nigercom Senior Staff Association. And the Sterling Products Senior Staff Association. At 1st Bi- ennial Delegates Conference held in 1978, Chief A.B.O Oga of sterling products Senior Staff Association was elected as the National President.

On Saturday the 15th of March, 1986, the foundation laying ceremony for the National Secretariat complex at KM40, Lagos-Abeokuta Road,Ijako,Sango-Otta, Ogun State, was performed by rear admiral Patrick. S. Koshoni, the then Minister of Labour,Employment and Productivity.

History  was made on 4th May, 1991 when the 1st phase of the National Secretariat complex was commissioned under the chairmanship of the Managing Director and Chief Executive of PZ Nigeria Plc, Chief  K.B.Jamodu.

Until recently CANMPASSAN was the only Senior Staff Association in Nigeria that is operating from her own built National Secretariat.

Since inception, the Association has had Twelve (12) National Presidents namely- Chief A.B.O.Oga(1978-1984), Dr. Femi Oladimeji (1985-1990), Mr.Tunde Oyelola (1990-1991), Otunba M.A. Osibanjo (1991-1992), Mr. Williams Utange (1992-1993),Rev. E. A.Adekoya (1993-1994), Mr.Abubakar Umar (1994-1997), Eng. R.B. Nneji (1998-1999), Mr. Tunde Kuti(1999-2002), Eng. R.B.Nneji (2002- 2004), Mr. Bello Danwali (2004-2007), Mr. S.Ajayi(2007- 2008), Mr. Abdul Gafar Mohammed ( 2008-till date.).

The Administrative arm of the Secretariat is headed by a National General Secretary which was always elected until May, 1995  when in compliance with the labour  law the first General Secretary in Person of Comrade B.O. D Iduh was appointed by the National Executive Council (NEC) at its NEC meeting held in Sokoto, in 1995.

After the resignation of the former General Secretary, Comrade B.O.D. Iduh in November, 2005, Comrade S.O.A. Babalola was appointed Ag. General Secretary of the Association effective 1st December, 2005 at the CWC meeting held on 26th November, 2005 in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He was later confirmed the substantive General Secretary of the Association at the 10th (2nd Tri- ennial) National Delegates Conference held on 27th October,2007 at Yebumot Hotels Nig. Ilorin, Kwara State.
